What's my toy made of?

What's my toy made from and is it really safe to use?

Silicone

  • Silicone toys are great fun to use - pliable and soft to the touch, but firm when you need them to be!
  • They warm quickly to body temperature. Solid silicone products can be heated in a microwave.
  • Transmit vibrations beautifully
  • If you are planning on sharing your toys silicone is the best material because it is made to be sterilised (boil for six minutes to kill any nasty bacteria) or even cleaned in your dishwasher.
  • Will not melt or deteriorate from the effects of heat or moisture, so they won't shrink or dry up like latex or vinyl toys.
  • Does not contain any plasticisers or phthalates.
  • Is non-porous so it will not absorb lubrication or bacteria
  • Is little more expensive than their latex or vinyl counterparts, but with a minimum of care, they beauties will deliver year after year.
  • Cums in gorgeous colours
  • Is safe for those with latex allergies
  • Must not be used with lubricants containing silicone
  • Silicone will hold up under a lot -but not infinite abuse. So keep it away from anything sharp that could tear or scratch it including cats who reportedly adore silicone sex toys and think they are the best cat toy ever!

Most of the FunFactory toys (except for those made from Elastomed such as Smartballs and the Layaspot ) are made of Silicone as are all of the Downunder toys!

Acrylic and Styrene

  • Its firm texture makes acrylic perfect for PC muscle-strengthening toys.
  • Our locally manufactured Pout Toys are made from acrylic or styrene material.
  • Styrene used by Pout is a medical grade used in the making of dental equipment.
  • The acrylics used are high grade optical acrylics
  • They are non-toxic and non-porous and therefore won’t absorb odours or fluids.
  • Can last a life-time if cared for

Glass

Glass and glass type sex toys come in all kinds of shapes and designs and can be visually stunning- sometimes they are so beautiful you will feel reluctant to keep them hidden away in your bedroom.

Glass can change temperature easily so you can warm it up or chill it down in the freeezer to add another dimension to your play. Acrylic and glass are easy to clean and safe for people with latex allergies

Most people ask about the safety aspect of using glass and the it's important to remember that while they can stand minor bumps and knocks they can chip or break easily and should be stored with care in a padded bag when not in use.

Not all glass is the same. Some toys are made of Pyrex or other temperature resistant types of glass but some are not so make sure before you warm them up or cool them down. Ditto when it comes to cleaning them because not all glass toys are dishwasher safe.

Do not ever use any kind of glass object as a sex toy that was not specifically intended to be used as one.

Elastomed

Your FunFactory Love Balls are made of this brilliant, colourful material which is durable, 100% skin-safe, odour free, hypoallergenic and easy to clean

Jelly

  • Crafted from a thick, translucent, flexible rubber.
  • Available in bright colours.
  • Much cheaper than their silicone sisters.
  • Not as smooth or silky -if you stroke a jelly toy with your finger, your digit is liable to stick.
  • Smells of jelly - kind of like warm plastic.
  • Cannot boil them or use soap to clean them so they are not really safe to share unless u use a condom around them
  • Some rubber jellies and plastics break down easily and even fragment- you can guess where those “little bits” land up!

Latex

  • Is porous and has a chemical smell that some find unpleasant
  • Isn't as long lasting as silicone but it it is cheaper
  • Because latex is porous you should not share your latex toy or use it both anally and vaginally unless you are willing to use it with a condom each time.
  • Latex is a short term ride, not a long-term relationship.

Plastic

  • Can appear smooth and sleek and sometimes have a metallic casing – sophisticated and high tech look
  • When a motor is encased in hard plastic instead of smooth rubbery material, you can really feel the vibe.
  • Plastic vibes aren't a top pick for internal use or in-out thrusting, but they make wonderful clitoral teasers.
  • Natural Contours products are made of high quality ABS plastic

CyberskinTM

  • Also known as thermal plastic.
  • Is a combination of silicone and PVC
  • Becomes warm with use and may be the closest thing to skin-to-skin sensation you'll find in a sex toy.
  • It offers a very realistic texture but is quite porous.
  • Should be used with a condom and should be powdered with corn starch after being washed.

Other materials include:

  • Metal Used mostly by S&M aficionados, metal toys are rare and potentially harmful: imagine a metal phallus clanging into your pubic bone. Ouch. Proceed with caution. Also used in PC muscle exercisers.
  • Vinyl- Similar to rubber, this inexpensive material is a favorite with fetishists.
  • Lucite -This hard material provides firm pressure, making it a favorite for prostate-stimulating toys.
  • Leather -Used for harnesses (check out our own brand of Whet Harnesses available in December) and restraints, many people find leather tough and sexy.
