South African results of the 2001and 2003 Pfizer Global Surveys
The global pharmaceutical company Pfizer- manufacturers of Viagra®, carried out the Pfizer Global Survey on Sexual Attitudes and Behaviours in 2001.
27 000 interviews were done in countries around the world to determine the sexual attitudes and behaviours of men and women over the age of 40.
In South Africa 999 people were interviewed. Approximately 1/3 of the sample were; English speakers, 1/3 Afrikaans speakers and 1/3 from the ethnic language groups.
Some of the key findings including the most commonly occurring female sexual problems were:
Lacked interest in having sex 36%
Unable to reach climax/orgasm 24%
Reached climax/orgasm too quickly 14%
Experienced physical pain during intercourse 16%
Did not find sex pleasurable 24%
Had trouble becoming adequately lubricated 24%
52% of women believe that they can enjoy lovemaking without having an orgasm.
73% of South African women believe that satisfactory sexual relations are essential to the maintenance of a relationship.
70% of South African women believe that women only enjoy sex with a partner with whom they have an emotional tie.
The 2003 Durex Global sex survey found that 67% of South Africans were happy with their sex lives, compared with the global average of 73%.
